Significant Others

by Sara Robinson, MA

If you’ve been married for any length of time, chances are you’ve hit a bump or two and experienced what you might consider to be marriage problems. I would also put money on the fact that you’ve probably had an issue or two specifically related tocommunication in marriage.

This doesn’t mean that your relationship is doomed, it simply means you’re human. Communication is one of the most fundamental and critical components to any relationship and it’s so easy to get it wrong. Miscommunication in marriage is quite common and is something that can be improved on.

Communication seems like such a simple concept and is one we often take for granted because many of us communicate constantly. We assume we’re doing it well because it’s a normal part of our day-to-day (think email, texting, phone calls, face-to-face interactions). It’s not very often that most of us check in to consider how we’re communicating until it becomes an obvious issue.

Without realizing it, we may not be communicating as effectively as we could, especially in the relationships that are most important to us. Marriage problems can often stem from breakdowns in communication. Something so simple can easily become complex.

Communicationis not only sending a message, but having the other person receive that message as you intended . This is where things get tricky. Consider this example:

You told your husband that dinner needed to be ready at 7. You thought this communicated that he needed to have dinner ready at 7. He heard that he needed to be ready to eat at 7 and is expecting that you cooked.

What happened? Miscommunication. Anything like this ever happen to you? Probably.

And probably what happened next is that you’re both upset with each other because you think you’re right and the other person is wrong. In reality, there were missed opportunities for effective communication on both sides of the conversation. And, since communication isn’t always face-to-face and may not be verbal (for example we often text), there is ample opportunity for miscommunication.

Remember: communication goes both ways and forcommunication in marriage (or in any relationship) to happen smoothly, both parties are responsible. So how can you solve it?

If you’re sending the message, check for understanding with follow-up questions. After you share information, saying “got it?” isn’t enough. The person thinks they heard what you meant, but did they really get it? You won’t know unless you ask them.

To Hire or Not to Hire?

TOPIC: To Hire or Not to Hire?

Moderator: Todd D. Lochner and Eugene E. Samarin of Lochner Law Firm P.C.

Description: Have you ever wondered why there are so many 1099 brokers? Strangely the answer to that question is not about the money or the work hours. Many hourly rates and commission compensation are often comparable with those of employees and they work the same hours, if not more. Another upside to 1099 brokers is that you do not have to pay payroll taxes or provide benefits. Sounds like a no brainer to just hire brokers as 1099 contractors then, right? Yet, as great as this option sounds, not everyone can be a 1099 broker! So as a potential employer, what's the difference between a 1099 contractor and an employee and why does it matter to you?! For starters, there are liability implications between employees and contractors. Also, taxes and benefits are something that every potential employer needs to consider. Finally, there are employment laws that mandate when and how a person is classified which do not take into account the way that you would prefer they are classified. If you want to know more about employee/contractor relations and how they apply in the brokerage context, please join Todd D. Lochner and Eugene E. Samarin from Lochner Law Firm, P.C. on December 6, 2017 to learn if your next employee should really be a contractor.

One small tweak to your workflow can help: Instead of viewing the current week, view the week that starts today.

This Today Plus Six view is more relevant and useful as you work.

It’s easier to find today. Today is always the first day shown. No more searching for the red dot to figure out where you are. Today is always in the same place.

It’s easier to find today.

You feel a better sense of progress. Do you ever feel like the week drags on? It’s no wonder—your calendar only changes once every seven days! Without a feel of the passing of time, it’s easy to feel like there’s no urgency. When the calendar updates every day and you can see things coming, you can feel the progress. Today’s a new day with new challenges.

You feel a better sense of progress.

You can see the approaching landscape. As you travel, the GPS continually updates to show you the approaching turns and intersections. To stay productive, you need the same regulary-updated information.

You can see the approaching landscape.

See how one week connects with the next. The week is a great unit to plan around, but it’s not isolated. This is easier to see if you think of the work week: the gap between Friday and Monday is the same as the gap between Thursday and Friday.

See how one week connects with the next.

If you also turn off weekends, you can see your work calendar go from Thursday to Friday, then straight to Monday, then Tuesday and Wednesday. It changes your perspective when you see the weeks abut like that.

To set up Today Plus Six:

If you use this computer for work, there are two more things you’ll want to adjust:

These will help keep your work calendar focused on work and give a great sense of continuity. Now if there were just a way to remove work hours to create a similarly focused home calendar perspective…

By viewing the week as today plus the next six (or four) days, we have a more dynamic view of the week. Instead of a folding map, we have a GPS to guide us through the week. Your calendar is one of the most important productivity tools you have; make sure it’s showing you the right things.
